Sometimes we forget to desensitize an item at the desk or the self-checkout machine fails to desensitize it, resulting in the gate alarm going off.
When the patron brings the item to the desk, be sure it is checked out to them before you desensitize it:
1) If it appears to be a self-check error, check their receipt. If item is listed on the receipt, it is okay to desensitize. If not, please ask for the patron's ID and check the book out to them.
2) If it appears to be a staff error, change Sierra function to Search/Holds on the drop down menu in the upper RH side, and scan the barcode. If it says it is checked out, it is okay to desensitize. If not, please ask for the patron's ID and check the book out to them.
3.) Austin Public Library has moved to RFID and no longer desensitizes their books. Feel free to desensitize APL books if they are triggering the PCL security gate alarms.
