Can visitors borrow from library storage facilities?

Requesting items from storage for visitors without borrowing privileges: This is something we do fairly regularly: we have a dummy unit account set up that we use to make the request, and the patron views the items at one of the reading tables in the workroom. The patron does need to give us some information: their name, email address, and item information like titles, call numbers, and volume numbers if applicable. If they need to make copies, we typically ask for some form of government-issued ID that we can hold onto while they take items outside of the workroom. Items owned by other units can be sent here, with the exception of BLAC or CAH items, which would have to be sent to their owning units.

One important thing to remember is that we need enough lead time to allow for delivery of books from storage: LSF deliveries come on weekdays, usually between 2:30 and 4:00, and requests need to be made the day before a delivery.

Also, LSF closes down for the days designated UT holidays (even skeleton-crew days) during the winter break, so materials at LSF are not accessible during this period.

Items at CDL can be viewed over there during their business hours (8-5, Monday-Friday), and Jeff will make limited numbers of copies for patrons, but there are no public-service copiers there, so if someone will need to make large numbers of copies they are better off having CDL items delivered here. CDL will send items through campus mail or hand-deliver them if staffing and workload allows; again, to be on the safe side they should give us a few days of lead time. CDL also closes down during the winter UT holidays, so they’ll be unavailable for a good chunk of time in late December as well.

If people contact the Information Desk or Ask-a-Librarian with requests for items to be sent to the PCL, you can route the calls to supervisors here, or forward the emails to Margaret Alvarado, and we’ll try to handle them.
